Future Tense

Future Tense is created by using the short version of Htjeti.

Htjeti / Want or Will conjugation:

Ja hoću / I want, will
Mi hoćemo / We want, will
Ti hoćeš / You want, willVi hoćete / You form. pl. want, will
On, Ona, Ono hoće, / He, she, it wants, willOni hoće / They want, will

Enclitics for Htjeti (we can’t start a sentence with this short version):

Ću / I willĆemo / We will
Ćeš / You willĆete / You will
Će / He, she, it willĆe / They will

Formation of Future Tense:

Ja ću / I willMi ćemo / We will
Ti ćeš / You will
Vi ćete / You will pl. or formal
On, Ona, Ono ćeOni će / They will

Negative form of htjeti can be formed by adding ‘ne’ to the short version of ‘htjeti’:

(Ja) neću / I won’t(Mi) nećemo / We won’t
(Ti) nećeš / You won’t(Vi) nećete / You won’t
(On, Ona, Ono) neće / He, she, it won’t(Oni) neće /They Won’t

Interrogative form of ‘htjeti’ is created by adding ‘ho’ to the short version of ‘htjeti’ + question mark ‘li’ + infinitive or Da li + short version of ‘htjeti’ + infinitive 

Interrogative form creation first option:

Hoću li / Will IHoćemo li / Will we
Hoćeš li / Will youHoćete li / Will you
Hoće li / Will he, she, itHoće li / Will they

Interrogative form creation second option:

Da li ću / Will IDa li ćemo / Will we
Da li ćeš / Will youDa li ćete / Will you form. pl.
Da li će / Will he, she, itDa li će / Will they

note: We can never start a sentence with a short version of ‘Htjeti’ alone (it goes in a second place and personal pronoun goes first). Otherwise it goes verb first + short version. If we are using ‘Ho’ form without personal pronoun then we can start a sentence with ‘Hoću alone. With negative form we can start a sentence with ‘Neću‘ alone. Interrogative form starts with Da li + short version + infinitive.

Three ways to create future tense:

  • Personal pronoun + short version of verb ‘htjeti’ + infinitive  / Ja ću pjevati.. I will sing.
  • Verb – i + short version of ‘htjeti’ / Radit ću— I will work  inf. – Raditi
  • ‘da’ + conjug. verb + inf. / Čujem da ćeš ići na put. / I hear you will go on the trip.

  • Ja ću pisati pismo. / I will write a letter (Personal pronoun + short version + infinitive).
  • Pisat ću pismo. / I will write a letter (Infinitive – i + short version).
  • On kaže da će pisati pismo / He says that he will write a letter (short version comes after ‘da’).
  • Ja neću pisati pismo. / I won’t write a letter (pers. pronoun + negation ).
  • Neću pisati pismo / I won’t write a letter (Negation + infinitive).
  • Kaže da neće pisati pismo / He says that he won’t write a letter (negation after conjunction ‘da’).
  • Da li ćeš pisati pismo? / Will you write a letter? ( Da li + short version of htjeti + infinitive).
  • Hoćeš li pisati pismo? / Will you write a letter? (‘Ho’ form + article ‘li’ + infinitive).
